Update on drawing of the drill

I removed the backing from the drill today but just not sure what I think of it.

Well, I just can not decide. I like the more natural form and again I enjoyed watching it change shape as the backing fabric washed away. It may be because I was so pleased the original drawing and I feel that the imperfections have rather taken over as apposed to complimenting the work. But I have learnt alot about this process which is really good.

First, too many stitches in the design, ie any attempt to correct mistakes which results in a build up of layers will add a lot of fulness to the drawing when the backing fabric is removed. Second, on washing away the backing fabric, try not to remove too much of the glue as this provides a good stiffening agent. Third, I need to make plenty of samples: taking notes of how the images are constructed, ie type of threads, layers or thickness of stitches, and tensions used. I also need to try different types of dissolvable fabrics. Also like to try some painted fabrics with the embroidery. This is just the beginning.

Artist Statement

I am a mixed media artist living and working in Bristol. Always interested in art for pleasure, I embarked on creative courses as my second son started school. I was secure in a happy family life, but when tragedy struck art became my way of making sense of the world that I had unconsciously become part of. Emotions that made no sense could be explored and played with: loss, anger, control and hope worked through until a sense of calm could be achieved.

The work can be textile or paper based and often involves photography, but the direction always varies as it responds to my emotional state: sometimes process driven, sometimes a reaction to feeling or a thought. It may be in the form of obsessive and repetitive mark making or the abstract use of colours and symbols that explore psychological states of wellbeing. Sometimes it just records a moment which may become a memory, or may just become lost. But the aim is always the same: to live through the conflicts of life and appreciate that sometimes it can be the things that go wrong and show our vulnerability that can actually strengthen and add the most value.
